The University of Newcastle Launches TalkCampus

The team at the University of Newcastle have partnered with TalkCampus as a way to provide students with access to a global community of support that is truly diverse, supporting institutions from 5 continents across 25 different languages.

International students are an integral part of The University of Newcastle and throughout the pandemic the Student Wellbeing team have been looking for ways they can continue to offer students offshore support and guidance. The team at Newcastle recognised how easily accessible TalkCampus was for both domestic students and their 6,000 international student population and how it could help them to broaden their reach of student support.

We are excited to be partnering with TalkCampus which will enable us to provide preventative and early intervention mental health support for our students through its peer to peer support platform. The social platform will provide University of Newcastle students a safe and supportive environment to engage with like minded students from universities and colleges around the world, talk about their feelings, create connections and support, increase feelings of belonging and reduce the stigma around mental health. Also when needed, our students will be supported by a clinical team in real time and with support provided in 26 languages it can be accessed by our students anywhere in the world.” - Professor Laura-Anne Bull, Pro Vice-Chancellor (Student Experience) and Academic Registrar at University of Newcastle

TalkCampus is a platform that offers instant support from the ease of a student's phone, 24/7 with real-time moderation and escalation. A combination of peer support, machine-learning and innovative design, TalkCampus offers a community of support for academic anxieties, isolation and life’s ups and downs while also providing social connection with like-minded people, in a non-judgmental environment.

TalkCampus intelligently alerts students to additional options for help specific to Newcastle, and the real time escalation is built bespoke with the team and is appropriate to a students location. In addition to this, the TalkCampus global safety teamwork around the clock, across multiple time zones, and are available to intervene in real-time if a student is struggling.

Over the past 22 months it has become clear that international students are craving more support from their institutions in the face of ongoing disruption and uncertainty. Student wellbeing and academic performance are intrinsically linked, and peer support platforms like TalkCampus can help students to boost resilience, combat the unique stressors they face and ultimately help them to realise their higher education ambitions. We are very excited to be welcoming The University of Newcastle to the platform and we know this will be a wonderful addition to their existing support services.” Jamie Druitt, Head of Product.
