Saint Michael's College Launches Peer to Peer Support Platform, TalkCampus.

Vermont based Saint Michael's College is a residential, Catholic, liberal arts college, and is the latest institution to partner with TalkCampus.

TalkCampus will complement the existing services currently offered through the College’s Bergeron Wellness Centre, which looks to provide ‘confidential care for the bodies, minds and spirits of the College’s diverse student population in support of their lifelong wellbeing’. The addition of TalkCampus to their student wellbeing program will help the team at St Michael’s to reach those students who are outside of the existing frameworks and connect them with relevant and timely support.

TalkCampus is the first student mental health service that provides support around the clock, with real-time escalation. Peer support is a well-evidenced form of support that provides instant, ongoing connection wherever a student might be directly through their phones. TalkCampus helps students to start having what can be really challenging conversations around how they are really feeling. Indeed, a recent survey found that since using TalkCampus 85% of students find it easier to ask for help when they need it and 82% find it easier to cope with life.

“We are so glad to be able to add TalkCampus to our range of student support services here at SaintMichael’s College. Peer support is integral to the student experience and is especially important during these challenging times. By partnering with TalkCampus, we will be able to expand our support services and give our students the opportunity to share their experiences, thoughts and feelings with their peers around the US and the world.” Kathleen Butts, Director of Counseling Services at Saint Michael's College.

One of the elements of TalkCampus that appealed most to Saint Michaels was the opportunity for their students to join the TalkCampus Buddy Program. TalkCampus gives students the opportunity to become community peer supporters and provides an online training programme to equip students with skills around how to support someone online including active listening, conveying empathy, self-care and supporting someone who is at risk.

‘Studying can be a really challenging time for students and it’s not easy to admit that you’re struggling. We are delighted to be able to add Saint Michael’s College to our global catalog of forward-thinking and proactive institutions and to be able to offer an engaging place for them to talk to other students about their mental health and wellbeing and join our volunteering program.’ Andrew Welch, Head of Partnerships, TalkCampus.
